Preparing Your Home for Optimum Comfort

comfortable 2.jpeg

Like most Americans during the COVID crisis, we find ourselves spending more time in our homes than ever before.  Some are exploring new hobbies by learning to cook; others have dusted off those old sewing machines to make masks.  Often times we find ourselves in our "bonus spaces" such as basements as we navigate new adventures.  Whatever your new passions might be, make sure you're exploring them with comfort in mind.

Start with a plan.  Consider if your existing HVAC system is substantial enough to meet the needs of a basement.  Is the additional square footage too much to add to your existing HVAC system?  Can the duct work expand into the new space and still function at full capacity?  These are questions that a professional can assess in order to recommend your best way-ahead.

Perhaps you're on a budget.  Maybe a portable basement HVAC system is the best option for you.  It can be used to either heat or cool air.  And, the unit can be turned off when your basement is not in use to save money on electricity.  Again, we assess your needs and provide the best options for your individual circumstances.

Whatever you decide, the last thing you want to do right now is be uncomfortable in your home, especially as we continue compliance with stay in place directions.  As our service is exempt from stay in place orders, we want to be available for our customers.  And as always, all appointments will be managed to be in full compliance with all federal and/or state guidelines regarding social distancing.  Let us serve you in whatever capacity you need so that you can make the right choice for your home and/or basement today.    Please make your appointment today!  (404) 803-7471

How to Reduce Allergens in Your Home to Stop the Sneezing

sneezing-atlenergyhvac

With the advent of COVID-19, has there ever been a time more important to lessen your urge to sneeze?  The entire world is desperately trying to stay safe and healthy.  As the order to shelter-in-place is our new normal, it's important to maintain the place our families have retreated to while we wait out this temporary storm.  Let's focus on healthy living inside our safe havens, our homes.

Here are some HVAC tips to keep your home in top shape and free of pesky allergens.

Using Quality Filters is one of the best ways to defend your home from poor air quality.  If possible, filters should have at least a MERV 8 rating to ensure more microscopic particles are trapped.  If you aren't already doing so, filters should be checked monthly, and replaced at least every three months.

Clean out Debris that may be surrounding your HVAC unit.  Remember, these units pull air from outside.  If dust and debris surround your unit, there's a chance those allergens are being pulled into your home.

Dust Registers and Return Vents often, but at least once a year.  Now is a great time to tackle it as part of your Spring cleaning.  Again, these allergens may be pulled into your home without the proper cleaning.  Use a damp rag to keep from spreading dust mites and other particles that may cause allergies to flare up.

While the COVID-19 virus has changed our world drastically, life events still happen.  Our promise to you is that we will meet your service and/or maintenance needs with the greatest of care for your health and safety concerns.

Rain and summer in Atlanta

We often get asked by customers if they should run their hvac units when it is raining outside. The answer is, yes! Outdoor hvac equipment is designed to work even in the rain. Sometimes, our outdoor units can act as a magnet for lightning strikes, especially on older homes, but even that is rare. If a customer wants to turn off their air conditioner during a major thunderstorm, they should go right ahead and do it. Simply using the thermostat to turn it off is the best method. Just don't forget to turn the AC back on!

The outdoor coil

An important part of a residential air conditioning system is the outdoor coil. If ignored, it can become clogged, reducing your systems energy efficiency. Recently, Atlanta Energy Solutions went to a new clients home and discovered that they were paying 10%- 15% more to cool their home than they needed to simply due to maintenance neglect. After a thorough tune up of their air conditioning system, we were able to reduce the energy consumption for their home and reduce the operating temperature of the air conditioning system. Cleaning the outdoor coil was an important part of this process, and is something that a home owner can do on their own. Simply follow the cleaning procedures that are outlined in your outdoor unit's manual.

Why I launched Atlanta Energy Solutions, LLC - a note from the owner

HVAC is a fairly standard business - services include heating, air conditioning, sometimes maybe even water heaters.  As HVAC practitioners, we install, we repair - overall, we keep customers comfortable in their homes.

After working in the industry for nearly 2 decades, I thought I knew everything.  Then, I met my wife, Amber.  Her background is in corporate purchasing.  Let me tell you - after speaking with her, as someone who has worked as both a salesperson and technician, I realized how often HVAC practitioners do things the way they have always been done; the whole 'trust me' attitude.  I knew there had to be a better way for customers in the modern market who often want to be more involved in their HVAC purchases.  Specifically, you want to understand our industry jargon and how your money is being spent.  Makes sense.

Rather than staying robotic in my craft, I went back to school to become an engineer.  I learned how the whole home works together and how to complete energy audits to diagnose potential problems.  I expanded my skill set to fireplace and gas log installation and repair.  I figured these skills would come in handy for my 'honey-do list' in my off-hours while I worked as an engineer by day.  Then, it hit me.  I could start a business and provide transparent, quality HVAC (+gas logs, energy audits, water heaters, ...the list goes on) for the Atlanta metro.  The idea of Atlanta Energy Solutions, LLC was born.

I am proud of the business we have built so far and owe my success to you, my customers.  As part of the transparency initiative, and to satisfy my wife's fellow purchasing colleagues, I leave you with the following tip:

Not all inspections are created equal.  For example, you may find a 'deal' on an inspection (also called a 'tune-up'), however, be aware that inspection may only include a visual inspection vs. a full inspection or tune-up, which involves a full diagnostic of your system (i.e. the technician opens up the system, takes measurements, records temperature data, and checks switches / overall operation).  The tune-ups from Atlanta Energy Solutions, LLC (starting at $89 one-time or $139 service plan) also include a cleaning and air filter replacement.  Happy to help should you need a tune-up.  Please call (404) 803-7471.

Furnace Burners

The burner assembly on your home's gas furnace is extremely important. Like most of the other furnace components, they should be serviced once a year by a licensed, qualified technician. The burner assembly can, over time, become misaligned and contaminated by rust and debris. A majority of our modern furnaces have a burner assembly that resembles a small jet engine while in operation, and also the burner assembly will sometimes have cross over tubes, which are small and get clogged easily. After these components get dirty, the problem only worsens due to an improper amount of air to gas mixture, which may actually cause your natural gas bill to be higher than expected. If left unchecked, severe rust can grow and could result in a delayed ignition or a no heat situation. Have your local heating technician inspect and clean the burner assembly each winter to be sure that it is free of dust, dirt, rust, misalignment, and any other contamination that could disruption the flow of gas and combustion air into the furnace. Severely rusted burners must sometimes be replaced.

Cleaning or replacing this component requires training, and a home owner should proceed with caution if attempting to clean the burner assembly.
